I understand you are having a new book coming out. Tell me a little about your book.
When I went to work as a counselor in a jail, I began to wonder what would happen if a strong Christian woman was wrongly accused and incarcerated? Would she turn her back on God? Would she crack under the pressure? Here’s the blurb from Desert Breeze Publishing:
Mindy McLaurin, thinks it’s the end of the world when she’s incarcerated on trumped-up embezzlement charges. While in jail, she investigates the death of an inmate who allegedly died of an overdose. Mindy suspects foul play when her cellmate dies and she learns that both women had ingested the same drug. Mindy trusts no one, including Drew Stone, the handsome counselor she can’t stop thinking about. She faces many challenges, including constant interrogation by the Major and emotional abuse from the other inmates. Upon release, someone is stalking her and framing her for the murder. Can she prove to Counselor Stone that she’s innocent of all charges before she loses him forever?
What do you hope the reader takes away from your book?
I hope the reader takes away the fact that even though we go through dark times, God is always with us. Sometimes God won’t take us out of the storm, but He’ll guide us through it.
What is the best advice you have been given for writing?
I had an agent tell me one time to write something every day. This was difficult for me to grasp because I didn’t want to write unless I had an hour to spare. I’ve found that I can get a lot done in fifteen minute increments here and there.
What challenges have you had in getting your book published?
I had an agent tell me one time that she thought Killing Time would be hard to sell because she wasn’t sure how many women would read a book partially set in a jail. Lucky for me, the editor at Desert Breeze saw it as something different and she liked it.
What was your first success in publishing?
My first success in publishing was finishing NaNoWriMo. That book, Queen of Hearts, was released by Desert Breeze Publishing in April. Another success would be that Killing Time, in its early stages was a finalist in the Duel on the Delta contest.
If you are using an agent – How long did it take you to get an agent?
I’ve not landed an agent yet. There’s been some interest, but I’ve not found the right person. I’d like to sign with someone who I can stay with however long I choose to write.
What was your best decision as a writer?
My best decision as a writer was to join ACFW (American Christian Fiction Writers). They’re an incredible group of people who have helped me more than words can say.
